Suruhanjaya Pengangkutan Awam Darat (SPAD) was established by the
government on Thursday, June 3, 2010. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib
Tun Razak to appoint Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar as chairman. Mohd. Nur
Ismal Mohamed Kamal as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Public
Transport Commission Act 2010 and the Land Public Transport Act 2010
passed in Parliament session 2010. SPAD purpose is to increase the
country's public transportation system into the National Key Result
Areas (NKRA).
Focus on Peninsular Malaysia after the Sarawak and Sabah .
Among them are determining policy and planning rail, bus and taxi
services as well as transport of goods by rail and road. SPAD will take
over the role of the Malaysian Railway Department, Commercial Vehicle
Licensing Board (CVLB) and functions of the Commissioner of Tourism in
dealing with licenses tour buses.
